Week 8: Japanese Fika & Sunday Dough

Tuesday, Mar. 8, 2016
Location:  WeWork (Flatiron)
Event: Where is Robin? USA! Book Launch
Food: Slider, chicken wing, and bacon with fig

This was competitive research for my yet-to-be-written children's book Your Roommate, The Roach. I don't know too much about the plot of Where is Robin! USA?, but I imagine it's probably the origin story of Carmen Sandiego. The menu included tinier, fancier versions of things I would normally eat.

Thursday, Mar. 10, 2016
Location:  MUJI (Midtown East)
Event: MUJI USA Unveils Found MUJI Sweden
Food: Cookies from FIKA

Naoko Yano, General Manager for MUJI's Planning and Design Office, talked about MUJI's process of traveling the world to discover great design. For the launch of Found MUJI Sweden, she was joined by
Lars Åkerlund, the CEO of FIKA, a chain of quickly multiplying Swedish coffee shops. FIKA is one of those places that I heard about recently and now seems the pop up everywhere. They provided a very delicious salted chocolate cookie so I fully support their rise to power.

Sunday, Mar. 13, 2016
Location:  Adorama (Flatiron)
Event: Photo Brigade's 100th Podcast Celebration
Food: Bagel and doughnut from Dough

I was very skeptical that a podcast about photography could be very effective, but apparently sometimes podcasts can have visuals. Photo Brigade was celebrating their 100th Podcast with a live recording at Adorama and giant balloons in the shape of 100. Mike Isler talked about a very cool project which required photographers to go 160 miles per hour in a Porsche to capture a commercial airplane taking off. Almost as cool as free doughnuts.
